Before the Dutch arrived at Easter Island, the islanders were divide into two classes, the Long Eared ruling class, and the Short Eared labourers. grueling race to colied the first egg of the sunbirds whick come to rest on an island a mile offshore. Long Ears are forbidden to marry Short Ear, but Noro believes that he can break this taboo if he wins and announces that he wishes to marry Remana, a beautiful Short Ear.
