Edward is a prince when Tom is a pauper, but they look like twins. In order to escape pursuit by the guards, Tom mistakenly takes shelter in Edward's room where they meet. Having realized that they look as one person, they change identity by exchange of clothes. As a result, Edward is driven out of the palace as a pauper. Living together with the poor, Andrew physically experiences the poverty and hardship of his people in their living. Eventually, Edward and Tome resume their true identity when Edward with better understanding of his people...
