1885 Young American Jane Callahan is travelling to Russia. Her job is to help McCracken to find potential customers. During her journey, she meets Andrey Tolstoy, an elegant and passionate young cadet. Hoping to meet Tolstoy again, Jane pays him a visit the military Academy. There she is introduced General Radlov, the man McCracken has asked her to seduce.

Radlov asks Tolstoy to come with him to McCracken's to read his proposal of marriage to Jane. Overwhelmed by his emotions and his love, the young man cannot but reveal his own feelings to Jane while making the general's proposal.....
