Truffaut's last film is an homage to the suspense master Alfred Hitchcock and the American detective stories of the 40s. Vercel, the hapless real estate agent is falsely persecuted by the police for murdering his wife and her lover. His beautiful and faithful secretary Barbara (who is his secret lover) believes her boss is innocent and whle he hides out from the police our courageous heroine tries to locate the real killer on her own.
