During the World War II, a Japanese army doctor Gong'er is infected with a terrible disease of syphilis while treating a lieutenant and lives in nightmare and pain ever since. After the War, Gong'er is still active as a doctor. But hindered by his disease, he refuses to marry his girl friend Meizuo but she insists on waiting for him. Six years have passed. Not knowing why his son should act like that, his father complains to his son that it is not fair of Gong'er to refuse marrying Meizuo. He does not know the reason until Gong'er tells him the truth, which also breaks the barrier existing between the father and son.
