Shiba, a wandering ronin, encounters a band of peasants who have kidnapped the daughter of their dictatorial magistrate, in hopes of coercing from him a reduction in taxes. Shiba takes up their fight, joined by two renegades from the magistrate's guard, Sakura and Kikyo. The three outlaws find themselves in a battle to the death. This is the directorial debut of Gosha Hideo, considered to be the master of samurai action films in Japan. Like his other films to follow, Three Outlaw Samurai reveals an exceptionally strong visual sense in Gosha's direction. Almost every frame is very well composed and effective. The film also contains some of the best choreographed and most graphicall violent swordfighting scenes in the history of the samurai cinema.
