The Lin family has four sons. The eldest Wenhung , runs a Chinese nightclub called Little Shanghai. The second disappeared during branded as a collaborator for the japanese afterthe war and later involved in smuggling drugs. He's betrayed, imprisoned and is reduced into a physical wreck. The youngest, Wen-Ching, is a deaf-mute and is sympathetic with the intellectuals who are bitterly disappointed with the Nationalist government which has taken over Taiwan from the Japanese. Conflicts between the locals and the mainlanders occur. There is a bloody suppression and many persecuted, including Wen-Ching.
