The two piano trios are both major works of Mendelssohns creative maturity. Hailed as the master trio of our era by the German press of the day, no.1 (1839) was written by a composer who had just turned 30; yet, a mere six years later, Trio no.2 (1845) was already destined to be his last chamber work with piano.
