Ulrich Muhe, Best Actor winner at the European Film Awards for his performance in this film, stars as Stasi agent Gerd Wiesler. Commissioned by his chief to monitor playwright Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch) and his actress lover Christa-Maria Sieland (Martina Gedeck), he installs microphones all over Dreyman's apartment to record their conversations and anything happening inside. However, Wiesler soon finds out the real reason behind his chief's order to spy on Dreyman, and he starts to empathize with the writer and his girlfriend...
